Come and buy some crap. . .

Ok, can we agree that Garage Sales are a little pitiful? You gather up all the junk that you have stocked in your house for who knows how long and pile it all together (trying to make it look nice) in your front yard and put prices on it and try to sell it to some poor soul? The thing is that people actually buy stuff! Lots of stuff! All kinds of stuff that you think. . .oh, I should just throw this out, NO ONE would ever buy this! So, you sit out in your yard looking all excited saying,

"Hey, come and buy up some of this crap. . .It's really GREAT crap. . .I mean stuff."

I had my first official garage/yard sale a couple of weeks ago with Matt's sister and some others bringing over their "stuff". We had A LOT of stuff, it's amazing what piles up while you're being pregnant, having babies, raising kids, working, sleeping, it never quits growing!! We actually got rid of quite a bit and we all made some serious cash too! The nice thing was that it forced Matt and I to go through boxes that we haven't touched since we bought the house almost 8 years ago!! Wow, there were some winners out there. I had wedding gifts that I hadn't used, and oh, my, the clothes. Check out this "matronly" Laura Ashley number from the early 90's. . .And didn't we all have a least one of these dresses/jumpers from Express in the early 90's? I had at least 2. My house is now free. . . .until I fill it up again!!

Yeah, I had a few of those. The big question is..... Did someone actually buy them?

I remember you wearing those! Classic! Remember your MOM'S closet? We found the best clothes in there--she didn't throw away anything. . . and I remember finding some real winners to dare Heidi with (for 1$)--like the Spirit's assembly bellbottoms! Oh, the memories . . . sigh . . .

Why did you not tell me about this sale so I could come over and buy some of your really great crap? We love crap at Chez Nelson.

Christy--it's not over yet, we decided we had enough left over to have another sale so we're having a 50 cent sale (well, a MOSTLY 50 cents sale) this Friday afternoon! Of course for you, it'll be a dime sale! You gave me a sweet deal on that nintendo!! We even have an office desk. . .I should've asked if you wanted it before you got your new one. Darn. Want a table??

LVC--I so wish I would have saved all those fab outfits of my moms. Do you remember the leopard print onepiece jumpsuit. Sweet!

Hollie--no buyers on the dresses. . . yet.

Kage--I just know those boxes were screaming to get those dresses out of there, when I pulled them out I was saying, "Really? This was cool then? Really?" Times they are a changin'.

MY MOM HAD ONE TOO.

I guess leopard print jumpsuits were all the rage at some point--the question is, why did they ever stop being the rage?

I am getting rid of crap too, but we're not allowed to have yard sales at the condo. Instead I am donating to friends, DI and Freecyling.

I do struggle with giving away some pieces of clothing. After all, you don't want to rob your kids of fabulous dress-up pieces and future school dress-up days.

A--I won't even mention (oh, too late) the shorts I found from the Limited circa 1988 ("Outback Red") I don't think they could've possibly made it with more pleats at the waist, and also my ten-button tee. Ah, memories.

My mom also had a sweet fitted black sweater with a little tie around the top with (little fake animal heads of some sort) ferrets maybe? That's what it looked like anyway. I'll take the leopard print bodysuit. She had the bod for it too. Me? notsomuch.

So now I'm dating myself, but in my day it was all Jessica McClintock. But isn't there something wonderful about elminating all that stuff? I am too lazy to do a yard sale so I just dump it all off at DI, but however you do it it feels so good!

(At least until you realize how fast it starts to accumulate again.)

Ha!! I had 5 of those express jumpers. They were my mission uniform. :-) Whenever I think of England, I am wearing that jumper in navy blue /w little white flowers. SWEET!

We aren't allowed to have garage sales here. I could do it at my friends house, but if I am going to load up all my crap..I might as well take it to GOODWILL. I did, one time, have a "free sale". I put everything I didn't want in our parking space and said it was all free. It was gone in about 30 minutes. :-)

What are you going to buy with all your money? A baby? :-) (many of my friends have garage sales to pay for adoptions..... trade in your crap for a baby!! It works for me!

One of the freakish things about Lubbock, Texas is that yard/garage sales happen any day of the week 365 days a year...weather permiting. Some people are pack rats, others are really poor and looking for hand-me-down upgrades, trying to save a trip to the DI or charitable "second-hand store". either way, I think most people suckers and attracted to yard sales, like stink to a monkey, at some point in life.

I even found myself stopping at one the other day to look at an upgrade for my youngest son's bed.

When we moved into our home here in Lubbock we opted to donate all the stuff that we felt like parting with. Being in such a new neighborhood (only two houses had been built) we didn't think we'd have good enough turn out. Otherwise I'm sure I could have made a fortune. We got rid of a ton of stuff. Stuff we had been packing around for 10 years....okay, I'm done spouting...I think.

I totally relate to the garage sale experience. When we left for Florida, I thought "No one will buy all this stuff!". I think the trick was having Christy there to send us good garage sale karma.

Enjoy the profits!
